Cast Iron or Fireclay

Thought of the Day…The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself. ~Oscar Wilde

As you’ve read in my SNAFU, Part 2 post you have learned that we have to replace our kitchen cabinets. As a result, Hubby and I have decided that we are going to do this remodel “the right way” instead of cutting corners. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not going overboard and taking out walls to make our dream kitchen, but making it fit US not the next owners, but us. I want more storage and counter space.

The last week has been sooooo unbelievably stressful! Between lunchtime and after work meetings, I met with four different contractors; two of them twice. I am sooooo tired!! It feels like it has been a YEAR… but it’s only been two weeks since we found the mold and I am so ready for this to be OVER! We still haven’t even had the cabinets removed or the mold!

We can’t have that process started until all the plans are done for our new kitchen and we select the supplier. Then working backward from when the cabinets are going to be ready we get a start date. I found out today from the last company we’re getting bids from it could be AFTER THANKSGIVING before this is done! UGH!!!! I fought back tears when he told me.

We’re waiting to hear back from him on his estimate and the last of the other four.

In the meantime, we have to decide what kind of sink to get. I have gone back and forth between an apron/farm sink or “traditional” undermount. Deciding between Corian, granite composite, cast iron or fireclay.

Our cabinets are going to be Shaker style so that’s why we were considering the apron/farm sink. We decided to go with a quartz countertop by Ceasarstone because it has a LIFETIME warranty!

Well, I have decided on the non-apron sink; but don’t know what type of material we should get.

This is where I need your help… I do pressure cooking so I ruled out Corian because of the high heat the plan will have; even though I so want the seemless/integrated sink for the ease of cleaning.

Hubby wants a “shiny” sink. 😉 [guess he’s grown attached to the Baby Steps shiny sink; I agree with him, it does look nice!] So that mean no granite composite…

…That leaves cast iron or fireclay. But which one?

Not that I plan on doing this, but I’m nervous that if I were to drop one of my Dutch Ovens (like the largest 7.25 qt) in the fireclay… will it break the sink (there’s no cast iron to hold it together)?

Now you see my dilemma? What do you think?

What kind of sink do you recommend and why?
