Need advice: Bamboo or plastic??

wpid-Advice-2010-10-5-06-38.png

Well, it’s just about time for me to start unpacking… I found the following locally at the Container Store and Storables.

I bought the bamboo, but am now having second thoughts. Bamboo or plastic?

They are both adjustable.

Bamboo closely matches the inside of the kitchen drawers.

Bamboo is a renewable resource.

Plastic is cheaper.

Plastic can be wiped with a wet cloth.

Plastic is white. Bamboo is… well… wood.

Bamboo can splinter, plastic can’t easily splinter…

Bamboo is quite a bit more expensive. The pieces shown are $29.95 (bamboo) and $17.99 (plastic).

What do you think?

I think you just got me in trouble. ;-) lol! I love the look of the bamboo ones and have been wanting to get them for awhile, may be bugging Brent about it again now that we’re moving into the new place. Maybe I can work out a compromise like 1 drawer a month until it’s done? :-)

Things to consider are how often you think you may actually need to clean them, how big the risk really is that it (the bamboo) will splinter, and the upfront cost vs. the environmental one.

…and reading back over this now, I realize that I am no help! lol!

I think if you read your own pro & con arguments, you have answered your question. Plastic is likely recycled… does that make it renewable? Was the bamboo harvested in a free trade tradition? What do you already own that you can reuse; the ultimate expense savings and earth stewardship?

I wanted bamboo because it is new and in vogue, waited for drawers to see what sizes I would need, used the plastics as a test AFTER washing them in the dishwasher, which I do periodically when the dirt crumbs get too gross, have decided I like what is working… You do not have to be me nor do what I do. It frankly surprises me that I am quite satisfied with what I have.

Where else would you be able to spend the savings? Which would bring you more satisfaction?
