Halloween Spirit

I didn’t get any of my Halloween decorations up! :( Where the heck did the time go? I guess part of it is because I haven’t gotten everything unpacked YET from the remodel and adding more crap to the rooms just wasn’t something I wanted to do.

WAIT! I did start using my Halloween mug! YIPPEEE!

I’m not completely without “spirit”. LOL! Get it?! “Spirit”… it’s a ghost! LOL!! I crack myself up sometimes. UGH! Sorry! (I seriously just thought it and instead of deleting the first first paragraph, I’m just pushing forward… ;) )

Anyway, my main reason posting this post wasn’t so I could ramble on about my ghost mug, but was to show you some great pumpkin carvings… I received these via email, so if they’re your carvings… please let me know and I’ll add your credit…

Be sure to scroll to the end to see the best one!

A guy at work sent me these photos. This years worlds largest pumpkin (at something over 1800lbs) carved by Ray Villafane (he has many photos on his website). You have to click on the link to see more amazing closeup photos… I originally had several photos to include, but after looking at Ray’s website I saw they were his. I don’t want to steal them so feel free to go look at his when you’re done here. :D

WOW! Now Ray is REALLY talented!

Friday Cocktail – End of a Crappy Day

Why is it that my two most recent “LIFE” posts have had to do with crappy days at work? I had another crappy day at work. Another teary day I had. WHOA, I almost started sounding like Dr. Suess.

I don’t want to air my dirty laundry here because some people from work read my blog, but needless-to-say I was looking forward to my “Friday Cocktail”. ;) Now, keep in mind I’m not a big drinker but have started enjoying a “Friday” (or Saturday) Cocktail.

I usually “steal” Emily or Jules’ cocktail recipes, but I don’t have any of Jules’ ingredients and Emily has been buried at work so no cocktail this week. So, I walked into my pantry and grabbed some of my favorite liquors and stared at them. Decided they all sounded good and would likely make a fruity “numbing agent”.

So, as I sit back and watch the World Series, I’m SIPPING on my drink… any faster and I’d be out cold I think.

So without further delay…

Cast of Characters: Peach Schnapps, Pineapple Infused Vodka, Malibu Rum, Cointreau (Triple Sec), Citrus Infused Vodka, 6 oz can of Pineapple Juice, Shaker and Ice

Put ice in a shaker. Add equal jiggers (1.5 oz) of each liquor. Add all 6 oz pineapple juice. Shake, pour and ENJOY!

What is your Friday Cocktail?

Homemade Vanilla Extract, Day 1

I love the taste of vanilla, the scent of vanilla candles, vanilla is so wonderful. Last December, I stumbled on The Italian Dish blog. I don’t remember how I found it, but am so glad I did. I found a Elaine’s recipe/tutorial on making Homemade Vanilla Extract.

I couldn’t believe just how simple it is. Two ingredients… and 6-8 weeks and that’s it!

Elaine recommended a couple of places to buy bottles. I ordered 25 4-ounce clear Boston round bottles with lids from Specialty Bottle Company for 67 cents each for a whopping $16.97, shipping was almost as much, but for a total of $27.71 (we don’t have sales tax in Oregon) I was very happy. They’re from Seattle so they didn’t take long to get here. Shipping was nearly immediate. I was VERY impressed and completely recommend buying from them. I didn’t have buy 25 bottles, but wanted to have extras just in case.

Elaine also recommended Beanilla for the beans but every time I tried to pay with PayPal I got an error message so I gave up. I didn’t want to take the time to call and place my order. It was frustrating because they have so many different varieties of vanilla and I wanted to order a sampler… just to see (taste) the differences. I may try again, but for now I picked up some Nielsen Massey whole vanilla beans around town at a fairly reasonable price.

As I mentioned, it takes 6-8 weeks for the vanilla extract to be ready, so I thought I would chronicle the progress. Yeah, it’s a long process, but I’m curious how it will progress.

So without further delay, let’s get started…

Cast of Characters: Whole Vanilla Beans, unflavored Vodka and bottles with lids.

Here are the 4-ounce clear Boston round bottles I ordered.
wpid-IMG_9794-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Wash them and let them dry (now that sounds kind of funny given they’re going to have liquid in them, but I didn’t want to have water in the bottles when I started).
wpid-IMG_9814-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Cut your whole vanilla beans in half.
wpid-IMG_9801-2011-10-27-07-30.jpgwpid-IMG_9802-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Slice them down the middle to expose the tiny vanilla caviar (this caviar isn’t fishy ;) ). Do not scrap the caviar out, just leave it exposed.
wpid-IMG_9803-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Place 2-4 vanilla pieces in the jar – I put 3 pieces (1 and a half beans).
wpid-IMG_9805-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Using a funnel, pour the vodka into the jar and cover the beans.
wpid-IMG_9806-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Screw a lid on tightly and Ta-Da! You’re done.
wpid-IMG_9807-2011-10-27-07-30.jpg

Elaine says that as you use it you can add more vodka and it lasts “practically forever”. As the flavor starts to fade, add a couple more vanilla beans and you’re set to never run out of vanilla extract again. Can I hear a YIPPPEEEE! :D

I ran out of vodka, so I only got two bottles done tonight. Am hitting the liquor store after work to get more and then I’ll finish all the rest.

I plan on taking pictures each week so I can see how it progresses. Be sure to come back and see for yourself.

The End of a Terrible Day

First let me apologize for my delay in posting this… it has been a work in progress… no, strike that… I just was so overwhelmed that I didn’t want to finish it… doing so would cause me to relive a terrible day. So please for now, pretend this was a few weeks ago… OK? Thanks!!!!

Not too long ago I had such a bad day that I came home from work and cried. In retrospect it really wasn’t my worst “work” day, but it was just “bad”.

If you have been reading my blog for a while (or even looked at my menu bar) you are aware we had a long (LONG) unplanned remodel. Well, as a result we lived out of boxes for a VERY long time. It was, and still remains, an overwhelming nightmare. Especially since we were trying to following the FlyLady’s Baby Steps to get our house in order and work our way out of CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome). It is driving me crazy! Sometimes I think literally.

Dude

At work, to save money our executive team decided that we’re going to merge two of our office buildings. As part of this move it means “downsizing” cubical space into more of a “bullpen” environment. Because I am a “techie” and had users in two locations I had two offices and had to cram all my stuff into one small cubical. :( We were supposed to sort/recycle/toss crap before the move. We had to have our offices packed by this past Friday because the move was happening on Saturday.

I was really busy before the move. I didn’t have time to do a full sort/recycle/toss before the move… which meant all the remaining crap was moved. UGH!

When I walked into my new space I just wanted to cry! I was so completely overwhelmed and just wanted to throw up. I was 75% unpacked and my “bullpen-mate” Dude couldn’t effectively use his space because he’s a “lefty” and the office is better suited for a “righty” (of which I am). Being the awesome friend I am I said I’d switch places with him. :D This meant moving the stuff I’d unpacked to his space. At least I didn’t have to re-box it! One big plus is that I have now have an adjustable desk. This means that I can have my desk at a lowly 27.4 inches or raised so that I can stand. :D

As part of the new smaller cubes we only have a single set of drawers, we had two before – I had four because of two offices. I needed a hug multiple times through the day. My good friend Kim (Hi, Kim!) was my hero multiple times during the day. She was there with hugs when I needed it. She was there with a helping hand and made sure that our move was smooth.

This is Kim and her hubby – forgive the quality I had to take the pic fast because neither of them wanted their picture taken.
wpid-KimJamey-2011-10-26-13-30.jpg

Well, Dude and I have a wall as our third wall so we wanted to get a two-drawer file cabinet so we can put a white board on top of it and split the two drawers. I contacted Kim again as she was in charge of the move to see if we could get the cabinet. Kim came through with flying colors!! THANK YOU, KIM!!! :D I had to ditch my “guest” chair, but Dude said then maybe our “guests” won’t stay long. LOL!

By 4:30pm I was so sick of unpacking I stopped and just sat there numb and on the verge of tears. I had a box to go home (and two still to bring in – UGH!)

On my drive home I called Mama and started tearing up – I was frazzled. By the time I got home and was fixing dinner I was in tears. Hubby listened as I drank a glass of sweet red wine (not very good wine BTW – won’t be buying it again). (Emily, if you’re reading this… I need your recommendation for a good sweet red wine. THANKS!)

Monica over at Monica Wants It posted a review of the four natural ingredient Coffee Mate’s Natural Bliss Vanilla. Monica discovered this FOUR ingredient wonder at BlogHer ’11. I couldn’t wait to try it.

Monica had a drawing for five people to win. I’ve entered several blog drawings… Guess what?!?!? I received an email from Monica letting me know I had won. Yep, I finally won something! I was so totally stoked!! This win plus Kim’s awesomeness made the end of my terrible day not quite so bad.

I received Monica’s envelope with two coupons, her business card and a note (doesn’t she have awesome handwriting? I’d love that as a font). As you can see below, I bought the Vanilla. It is soooo yummy! I love that it is only FOUR ingredients! There are two more flavors (Caramel and Sweet Cream).

wpid-IMG_9987-2011-10-26-13-30.jpgwpid-IMG_9988-2011-10-26-13-30.jpg

I haven’t decided which other flavor I am going to buy… decisions… decisions… What do you think? Be sure to look for Coffee Mate’s Natural Bliss Vanilla in your grocer’s dairy section.

THANK YOU, Kim and Monica, for making my terrible day not so bad after all.

Have you seen this? Have you tried it? If so, which flavor and what did you think?

iOS 5 Bluetooth Surprise

I have an iPhone 3GS. I have had it for two years and have upgraded to the newer iOS (Apple’s mobile operating system) versions along the way. I love my iPhone. Among other things, I love that I can hook it up to my car (Toyota Prius) via Bluetooth and use my car speakers as my “headset”. I can listen to my playlists, Pandora, iHeartRadio, basically anything with audio.

Here’s is what my radio looked like when hooked up to my iPhone…
wpid-IMG_0002-2011-10-20-13-00.jpg

Yep limited controls… play and pause. One thing that bugged me is that I couldn’t navigate my playlists with without holding my iPhone… I don’t do that for two reasons… one distracted driving and because it’s now illegal in Oregon “hand hold” phones while driving.

I updated my iPhone to iOS 5 and when I got into my car I had a really nice surprise… I was surprised more because I thought Toyota had limited the controls like they do on the Navigation system… sorry… I digress that’s another venting session for another day… To my surprise, it was iOS which was limiting the functionality!
wpid-IMG_0003-2011-10-20-13-00.jpg

YEP… now it looks like it does when I have a CD in… It lists the track information AND I can control skipping from my steering wheel! I can even use the RPT (repeat) or RAND (random) features. YIPPPPEEEEE!!! The little things that make me smile… :D

Where you surprised by any iOS 5 features?
