Thought of the Dayā¦Space, the Final Frontier⦠To boldly go where no man has gone before. ~James T. Kirk, Captain, USS Enterprise
Youāre wondering āHow is this post an In the Kitchen post with a beginning like that?ā Trust me⦠itās comingā¦
If youāre a fan of Star Trek you might know what today is⦠admittedly, I didnāt⦠OH NO! The sky is falling! A Star Trek fan who doesnāt know the significance of September 8, 1966! šÆ How sacrilege!! š
Today is the anniversary of the Star Trek television premier. Who knew when they woke up on September 8, 1966 that television would change forever? Not many people did⦠I surely didnāt. I was a little girl and donāt even remember that dateā¦
Now, jump forward to the re-runs⦠I fell in love with Star Trek. Iāve said it before⦠Iām a geek! I loved watching the re-runs of the original series (TOS)⦠then⦠to our surprise they made a movie. I remember seeing Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the theatre and was surprised at the vastness of seeing it on the ābig screenā⦠too bad the movie wasnāt that great. Yep⦠Iām not a huge fan of the first film.
Then, in the summer of 1982 we were blessed with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan! I LOVE that movie! Admittedly it was strange seeing Ricardo Montalbanās bare chest⦠I mean āMr. Roarkeā out of his white suit and baring his chest⦠I know, I know⦠he was reprising his role as Khan Noonien Singh from the 1967 Space Seed episode, but come on⦠admit it⦠it was S-T-R-A-N-G-E.
Did you cry at the end of Wrath of Khan? I did⦠come on⦠admit it⦠did you?
Whew! In 1984 we were relieved when Star Trek III: The Search for Spock came out. Albeit, not a great movie ⦠but better than the first one!
Really⦠this is an In the Kitchen post⦠keep readingā¦
I loved the comedy that was slipped in between the āmessageā in the 1986 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. _ā_Donāt forget where we parked.ā and āCapān there be whalesā¦ā LOL!!!
When Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) hit TV in 1987 I was in heaven⦠I couldnāt wait for Star Trek each week. Hubby on the other hand⦠not so much⦠heās not a āfanā like I am. š (NOTE: itās funny though that he knows more about Star Trek than heās willing to admit. š ) I LOVE āQā the episodes.
Iām not even going to get into the 1989 Star Trek V: The Final Frontierā¦. UGH! What were they thinking?
Then in 1991 TOS movies ended with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It was the end of an era. Yes, characters kept popping up in later series episodes (I LOVED Star Trek: Deep Space Nineās (DS9) Trials and Tribble-ations! What a great way to pay tribute⦠it was my favorite DS9 episode.
I could keep going with talking about my favorite TV episodes and films⦠but I suspect some of you are quite bored ⦠that is if you kept readingā¦
I promise⦠this really is an In the Kitchen post⦠youāre almost thereā¦
Needless-to-say, Y-E-S I am a Star Trek fan⦠I own ALL the movies (including the 2009 Star Trek movie that COMPLETELY BROKE CANON ā Gene Roddenberry flipped in his afterlife (and in space ā some of his ashes were taken into space) at the ācreativeā freedom the writers took⦠UGH!!! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING breaking Star Trek canon like that! ARGH! š”
OK⦠OK⦠OK⦠Iām calming down⦠Sorry⦠if you hadnāt figured it out⦠Iām not terribly happy with how they broke Canon.
UPDATE: AFTER talking with my friend Kim I have to admit that I DO like the 2009 Star Trek movie. Donāt love the fact that they broke Canon, but did like the way they introduced the characters. Also realize that to continue the franchise they have to have some creative freedom⦠this movie gives them that⦠but there are parts of the movie that I am strongly opposed to (donāt want to list them because I donāt want to spoil it for you).
Anyway⦠to celebrate the 44th anniversary of Star Trek watch this video on how to make a Star Trek cake. Ta-Da⦠hereās the In the Kitchen part⦠š
I love the fact the Star Trek cake creator is a guy!
