New Kitchen, Part 16: New Floor
This is a photo intensive post, but a lot went into getting us our new floor…
We used to have carpet in our family room. We decided to have it replaced with a hard wood floor. Here Oscar is cutting out pieces of our old floor to feather in the new floor.
It was amazing what a great job Oscar did feathering in the wood.
Oscar also needed to feather in where the idiot that built the house didn’t put hard wood so that the entire kitchen and family room have hard wood.
Since we were taking out the island, Oscar had to repair the board that had a hole in it for the electricity supply…
Here Oscar is sanding the new floor and removing the old finish.
Here is where the old and new floor meet… He did a GREAT job!!
WOW!
Here’s the Powder Room floor…
This is Steve (he’s a sub-contractor) he’s applying warm water to the entryway floor to raise the grain so that the wood will accept the stain (yep, we’re staining it)..
Here is the kitchen and family room just as they’re applying the warm water…
After the floor has dried (about 1-2 hours), time to apply the stain. Red Mahagony …
See how the grain stands out? This is from the warm water…
Steve and David “dipped” the new heat registers so they’d match and the insides are done, too…
… The stain they use dries in a couple of hours and then it is time for the AWFUL smelling first coat…
All done… we had to go to a hotel because the smell was soooo AWFUL!
I was wearing a respirator the smell was sooooo bad!
There you go, Brad/Brent/Kevin… I posted a picture of me… 😉
Here is the floor the next morning… YES the backdoor and windows were open… I was trying to air the house out…
It was SOOOOOOOOO cold in the house!!! I had all the windows and doors open! I could see my breath! It was worth it! It smelled so badly.
BURRRRRR!!!
There is one more coat to go on the floor when everything is done… I sure hope it’s warmer…
wow the floor looks awesome! Here’s a hint… don’t leave an Iodine bottle sitting on it… 🙂
