Memorial Day 2012
Memorial Day is an American holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. We take this day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Originally, it known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the Civil War dead by decorating their graves. In 1971, it became an official federal holiday.
Many in the USA observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries/memorials and/or holding family get togethers. It also unofficially signifies the beginning of summer. When I was in school we were already on Summer Break, but here in Oregon, they still are in school (until mid-June). Seniors graduation next week though.
We only went to school after Memorial day if we were making up snow days.
I don’t remember ever going to school after Memorial Day. I’m “a lot” older than you… 😉 Maybe we did, but that was so long ago I can’t remember.
